How much of a role does metabolism play when losing weight? Metabolism has become somewhat of a buzzword in the world of weight loss. Many self-proclaimed experts tend to throw the word “metabolism” around without understanding how it truly works. There are so many questions, contradictions, and misunderstandings about weight loss. With an influx of information circulating in the weight loss sphere, it can be overwhelming at best. This is why we’re here to break down the role and function of metabolism in weight loss.
Metabolism 101
In the simplest of terms, it’s how your body converts and uses food for energy. The state and health of a person’s metabolism are dependent on several factors. Anything from genetic predispositions or overall health history can affect a person’s metabolism.
Some people were born with “fast” metabolisms. This means they can eat as much as they want, yet still have trouble gaining weight. However, some people struggle their whole lives to lose and keep off weight, even if they don’t eat a lot. This is what makes it so complex. Your weight and state of health have little to do with how much you eat, and everything to do with your metabolism.
The rate at which your body expends or burns calories is also a component of your metabolism. It could take months or years to lose weight, even with the right diet and amount of exercise. This is why metabolism plays a huge role in weight loss.
What is a Metabolic Diet?
Though it may seem impossible at times, there are ways to change your metabolic health. Although some people seem to be born with a speedy metabolism, this doesn’t mean you can’t have the same. One of the most successful ways to shift gears in your metabolism is through a metabolic diet.
A metabolic diet is a way of eating that is meant to increase your metabolic rate. Depending on a person’s body composition, everyone possesses a different basal metabolic rate (BMR). This is the baseline amount of calories needed to keep your body functioning as it rests. Your BMR will differ based on your height, weight, and age.
Although there are a ton of famous metabolic diets out there, they often miss the mark. Fad diets keep women in a state of fluctuation and uncertainty. These diets also fail to address the root cause of excess fat. A metabolic diet that is both healthy and effective is dependent on your unique health history.
How do I Achieve a Fast Metabolism?
Increasing or quickening your metabolism will differ from person to person. The number one thing you can do to achieve a fast metabolism is to create more safety in your body. After years of yo-yo dieting, restrictions, and meal replacements, the body and nervous system start to go into survival mode. This can create more excess fat than desired. For women in their 40s-50s, boosting your metabolism can be even more of a stretch.
How do I Increase my Metabolism?
Our bodies can sense when there’s a lack of ample nutrients. Did you know that our bodies will perceive any lack of food as starvation? As a result, fat deposits may increase as a form of protection. This is why restriction simply doesn’t work. To successfully increase your metabolism, you must first reestablish safety in your body. Focus more on nutritious, whole, and healthy foods. Give your body what it needs.
