When it comes to matters of fat, there are many factors to consider. A slow metabolism is often the main culprit. But causes of weight gain are numerous and varied. And yes, a lack of sleep could absolutely be a contributing factor as well. Let’s explore what underlying factors may be the cause of weight gain.

Does Lack of Sleep Cause Weight Gain?

So, does lack of sleep cause weight gain, too?

Getting consistent, uninterrupted sleep can do wonders for overall health. Without it, you can feel dragged down during the day. When the body can’t recharge appropriately, it might not have the energy necessary to stay relatively active. The mind won’t be as sharp as normal without a good night’s sleep. Thus, you might find yourself more stressed and less likely to stay healthy.

It’s true, insufficient sleep may be partly responsible for creeping weight gain. Women who sleep fewer than 6 hours a night may have a higher body mass index (BMI) than those who sleep longer. And a high BMI can be partly responsible for weight gain and/or obesity.

If you are concerned about your lack of sleep, there are a few things you can try. You can add minutes or hours to your sleep in a few ways. Cut down on caffeine, limit screen time just before bed, or go to sleep every night at a consistent time.

What Other Possible Causes Could There be for Sudden Weight Gain?

For women over 40, a slowing metabolism is usually the main reason for weight gain. Eating too much sugar or high-processed foods will certainly put on extra weight. Eat healthy foods, drink lots of water, and try to de-stress where you can!
