As we age, so do our bodies. Women experience a range of changes during the aging process, especially during their mid-life. Sometime during their 40s or 50s (or for some, even during their mid- 30s), women are bound to expect a change known as perimenopause.
So, what is perimenopause, and what are the symptoms associated with it?
In the simplest of terms, perimenopause is the body’s transitional period before menopause. It is when you begin to notice, among other things, a much slower metabolism. Foods that may have once been no problem to eat, may cause changes in weight. Processed snacks with lots of additives are no longer a viable option for your source of nutrients.
Estrogen, a predominantly female hormone, is primarily in charge of maintaining a woman’s sexual and reproductive health. During this phase, a woman’s ovaries begin producing less estrogen. This is the body’s way of preparing you for when it ceases to release eggs entirely.
Decreased estrogen levels may result in a decline in fertility. Though it is certainly true that women can get pregnant during perimenopause, it may be challenging for some. Perimenopause is the body’s way of telling a woman that her childbearing years are coming to an end.
Telltale Perimenopause Symptoms
Some women experience a brief term of perimenopause. However, this is not often the case. On average, women experience this stage of their life for about four to eight years. It is a gradual change that prepares the body for menopause. During this time, women may experience menopause-like symptoms. Hot flashes and night sweats are common, telltale signs. Other symptoms are vaginal dryness and irregular menstrual cycles.
When a woman has gone a full 12 months without a period, she will know she has reached the menopause stage.
